Alrededor de 1950, cuando se publicaron los resultados de los primeros estudios sobre el smog en Los \u00c1ngeles, Houdry empez\u00f3 a preocuparse por el papel de los gases de escape de los autom\u00f3viles en la contaminaci\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica y fund\u00f3 una empresa especial, Oxy-Catalyst, para desarrollar catalizadores para motores de gasolina, una idea adelantada a su tiempo por la que obtuvo una patente (US2742437). La adopci\u00f3n generalizada tuvo que esperar hasta que se elimin\u00f3 de la mayor\u00eda de las gasolinas el tetraetilo de plomo, un agente antidetonante extremadamente eficaz por motivos medioambientales, ya que el agente \"ensuciaba\" el convertidor al formar una capa en la superficie del catalizador que lo inutilizaba.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>John J. Mooney y Carl D.
