Um 1950, als die Ergebnisse fr\u00fcher Studien \u00fcber Smog in Los Angeles ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurden, machte sich Houdry Gedanken \u00fcber die Rolle der Autoabgase bei der Luftverschmutzung und gr\u00fcndete ein spezielles Unternehmen, Oxy-Catalyst, um Katalysatoren f\u00fcr Benzinmotoren zu entwickeln - eine Idee, die ihrer Zeit voraus war und f\u00fcr die er ein Patent erhielt (US2742437). Die breite Einf\u00fchrung musste warten, bis das \u00e4u\u00dferst wirksame Antiklopfmittel Tetraethylblei aus Umweltschutzgr\u00fcnden aus dem meisten Benzin verbannt wurde, da das Mittel den Katalysator \"verschmutzt\", indem es eine Beschichtung auf der Oberfl\u00e4che des Katalysators bildet und ihn dadurch effektiv au\u00dfer Betrieb setzt.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Der Katalysator wurde von John J. Mooney und Carl D.
